Original Late 1600's Mercator-Style double-hemisphere World Map of the then-known and believed geographic areas. Framed, 27" x 23", Excellent Condition. Printed by copper-engraving process, believed printed about 1695, colored by hand- blue, red, green, brown-which has survived very well, and was included in an Atlas in 1719 by Henri Chatelain, a cartographer of Amsterdam. Dimensions about 27" x 23"; matted and framed; unpackaged weight about 7 pounds.

Glass cover is by TruVue Conservation Glass, which blocks ultraviolet light. The framed map has been kept out of sunlight, other direct light, heat and high humidity since my wife and I have owned it.

The matte is Ultramat 2126. A spectacular map, essential for any World or North American collection. This map is in excellent, near pristine condition with no marks, tears or signs of use, though there is a typical middle fold. This world map ["Mappe-Monde" as shown in the title at the top] was made under authorization of the governments of Holland and West Frisia; and it was intended to show the voyages and trade routes of the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company in both hemispheres. Of special note, among others, are: California is shown as an island, based on earlier explorers' reports; areas of Australia and Antarctica are shown as unknown lands; the Great Wall of China is shown, as are some exploratory voyages.

This map is beautifully decorated, including with ships, a Royal Lion at the top and, at bottom center a female figure seated in a round fortification and holding a horn of plenty and a liberty hat atop a staff, protected by another Lion. Tables at the top describe explorations and voyages. The bottom corners provide an index of locations, for example Sumatra is marked at 42 d H.

My research sources for the above information included Ronald Tooley, The Mapping of America [1980]. My wife and I retired and we are down-sizing our collection.
