A beautifully engraved map of the world prepared in 1688 by Jacques Jaugeon, French scholar and royal typographer during the reign of King Louis XIV. The map presents the world in two hemispheres, surrounded by allegorical figures representing the constellations and definitions of geographical terms meridians, parallels, poles, tropics, the equator, etc. The corners and the centre are decorated with various artistic representations of the solar system, the phases of the moon, etc. All the text on the map is in French. Size is 39 inches by 24 inches.
On Lower Left corner "Grave par Jean Crespy"and on lower Right Corner "Ecrit Par Claude Auguste Berry"both in tiny script. At about 2 O clock there is a stamp in Blue ink "Bibliotique du Roi" in Oval shape stamped with Crown & 3 Fluer di lie. That is all I know about the Map. I do not know when it was produced.Condition of the paper suggest 20th century reproduction. I can find no mention of the 2 individuals in the lower corners.
